Chinese City`s New Logo: A Blatant Copy of Disney`s Logo Design
Winner is not always
a source of inspiration, but sometimes, he/she takes inspiration from other’s
work to be labeled winner. For example, the logo of the Chinese city of Dalian,
which won the best logo title in the logo competition run by Dalian Culture and
Tourism Bureau, turned out to be a blatant copy of Disney’s iconic logo design.
Out of thousand logo designs submitted in the competition, one which chosen as
the best is facing the criticism from all over. Masses are coming in support of
Disney’s logo, which is well known for years. People have filed the complaints
for the new logo design of the Chinese city, which is being celebrated as the
creative, modern and best logo by many people, having no knowledge of Disney’s
logo.
Some blamed the
Dalian Culture and Tourism Bureau of fake competition, as they had not provided
any detail about the selection process of the winner. The competition was very
low key, and it was just to select a given logo only.
People could ignore,
if the ‘D’ in the logo of the Dalian was not ditto copy of the ‘D; from the
Disney. There is no difference between the two. That was, however, was
acceptable by the selector in the competition, who might not have the knowledge
about the famous logo, which makes them incompetent to be the judges of the
logo design competition.
The Dalian’s Logo Details
The design of the Dalian
city logo consists of the entities like lighthouse above the stylized blue
water, and the word ‘Dalian’ is written beside that, with that there is one
bird flying above the water. With some Chinese text, which says ‘Iron Mountain
Lighthouse.’ However, they had covered and symbolized the city in a good way,
without having a copy, they could be considered the best. But no work of
plagiarism should go unnoticed.
Many viewers reviewed
it; some said “initially logo looked very soothing and good to us, we were
happy to see one creative and aesthetically beautiful logo design,” but then
they had realized it was copied stuff, which changed their perception about the
design and logo designer of that particular one.
The participants
required to prove their work, and guarantee of original work, to have the
participation in the competition. Which might lead to the disqualification of
the designers of the Dalian’s logo designer, but he was successful in proving
to be original, may with work and manipulating the organizers and selectors.
The Possible Action Against the Winner
There could be
severe charges of plagiarism against the winner of the logo competition if
Disney files a case against him. However, the case can lead to a very bad
reputation of the designer; besides that, he must pay the penalty for copy.
However, if Disney
does not file any case, still, the designer may lose the prize money of the
30000 yuan (US $4300), and face disqualification not only from the competition
but also for future events. And according to many people, there is no doubt in
design being an exact copy, which should not be doubted, and disqualification
is a must. But things do not work in that way; the proper way is to investigate
and see things more clearly with investigation. As people should listen to the
logo designer, and know if he has something to tell or clarify.
That is not only
Disney, but various companies are blaming him for copying even the graphic
portion. It seems nothing is original in the logo, multiple parts are taken
from various places, and biggest mistake added to it is the design of the
Disney. However, the action not only from Disney but from different designers will
be taken. Also, the Chinese work in the logo turned out to be copied, according
to the claims of the calligrapher Ye Genyou the Chinese characters in the logo
design were taken from his work, and designer must pay the price for that. And Philippines designer known as the ‘blueii’
said the design of the lighthouse is the work which is hugely copied from his
work. And blue water in the logo design is very much inspired by the emblem of
the Lianshui city.
With all these
claims, the highest price can be paid, besides that certification can be
canceled. All these actions would be undertaken, and when charges would be
proved, if not, the winner will remain untouched.
The city’s logo was
presented to illustrate the delightful view of the town, and with that, it also
demonstrated the culture, diversity and progressive idea of it.
Many people accused
the management and organizers of rigging while selecting the winner. And their
simple questions to them is that, “How can the selectors not know about the logo
of the Disney?”, which is however right thing to ask. Chinese tourism also came
underscan for approving all this. This is a clear case of going against the law
by passing plagiarized content to be above all.
The logo not only
impacted the creator, but it also changed the perception of the people about
the city and tourism department. Earlier, many wanted to visit, and might be
inspired by the iconic logo design, but coming up with a winner who is copying
from all over, made people realize trust is something not to do until there are
things in the right way.
